Q-1 What is a tummy tuck procedure?
A- A tummy tuck is the most effective way to tighten your stomach area. It also gets rid of loose or wrinkled skin. Stretch marks between the belly button and pubic hair are eliminated. Fat tissue in the lower abdomen is removed. The abdominal wall muscles are tightened so that even when sitting down or bending over the abdomen doesn’t stick out. Say goodbye to holding in your belly.
A- There are different types of tummy tuck procedures for different patient needs. All types of abdominoplasty involve the removal of excess skin and the tightening of abdominal muscles, except for the endoscopic abdominoplasty. The endoscopic tummy tuck only involves the tightening of abdominal muscles and the removal of small amounts of fat. No skin is removed. The traditional tummy tuck procedure addresses imperfections in the entire abdominal area both above and below the navel. When a mini tummy tuck is performed, the surgeon only works on improving the area below the navel. An extended tummy tuck can also improve the appearance of love handles on either side of the hips, in addition to the abdominal area. A circumferential abdominoplasty is usually performed when a massive amount of weight loss has taken place, leaving an apron of loose skin around the entire body. This procedure may also be referred to as a lower body lift.
Q-3 What is the difference between Mini-Tuck and a Classical, or Full Tuck?
A- In a mini-tuck, an incision is made along the upper margin of the pubic hair. A small strip of skin is removed including the hypodermis. The muscle tightening is not included in this operation. The navel is left in its original position. The Mini-Tuck is the ideal intervention for tightening flabby skin on patients without any serious weight- or fat problem but with wrinkled, folded skin (extra tissue, or: pannus) within the abdominal area.
Q-4 Is the abdominoplasty procedure the same as Tummy Tuck?
A- Yes, They are basically synonymous. Abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a Tummy Tuck, is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure used to tighten overly stretched abdominal muscles and skin in an effort to achieve a smoother, flatter appearance. Whether stretched by factors such as weight gain, weight loss, pregnancy, etc., the abdomen frequently fails to return to its original shape. . Stretched beyond the capacity to return to normal, abdominal tissues don’t always respond to various exercise and diet programs. In such cases, a tummy tuck may provide a highly effective, immediate solution in the treatment of stubborn abdominal areas. In short, a tummy tuck may dramatically tighten the abdominal muscles as well as remove sagging, excess skin and accumulated fatty tissue. Consult us at Cosmetic Harmony.
Q-5 Does an Abdominoplasty leave obvious scars?
A- With a full tummy tuck, the horizontal incision is placed along the upper end of the pubic hair and extended toward the love handles or hips. It is important to discuss with the surgeon the design of the preferred underwear in order to make a strategically positioned incision. In most cases it is possible to put the incision in a position which will be covered by the patient’s preferred underwear or swimsuit.
Q-6 What happens with the navel?
A- With the mini-tuck the navel is left in its original position. With a full tuck, which also includes the tightening of the underlying muscle tissue, the navel is removed and repositioned at the end of the surgery.
Q-7 Will the navel be lifted, too?
A- A younger naval tends to be round, but with maturity the naval tends to flatten horizontally. A tummy tuck does not necessarily make the naval round again, but thanks to the tightened skin after a tuck, it is generally rounder and younger looking than before the surgery.
Q-8 Is the Plastic Surgery on the Abdomen always done under general anesthesia?
A- A full tuck, which may include the tightening of the underlying muscles, requires general anesthesia with sometimes an over night stay at the clinic.
Q-9 What is the difference between a full and a mini-abdominoplasty?
A- A full abdominoplasty is one where there is a hip to hip incision and a larger portion of skin is removed. A mini-abdominoplasty is performed through your c-section scar and only a little or no skin is removed but the abdominal wall muscles are tightened.
Q-10 Is there a difference in price from a full to a mini abdominoplasty?
A- There is a difference in price. Prices may vary from about $2,000 to $4,000 for a mini abdominoplasty and from $6000 to $8000 for a full abdominoplasty procedure. Get a Free Quote now at www.cosmeticharmony.com
Q-12 When should I have this surgery?
A- Whenever some of the problems related below be your case.
Q-13 How will a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) improve my personal life?
A- The benefits to your appearance include a flatter, firmer belly, a smoother stomach contour, and a narrower waist. Abdominoplasty also benefits many patients with abdominal stretch marks. In many cases, stretch marks below the navel are removed along with the excess skin at the close of the procedure, while the appearance of the remaining stretch marks is often improved when the skin of the abdomen is pulled taut.A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive for through exercise and weight control. Sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals. Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. Tummy tuck will help you gain your confidence back, restoring your beauty and improve even your sexual life.
Q-14 What are the areas a tummy tuck will deal with?
A-
Loose or wrinkly skin, stretch marks. This can be a result of ageing, pregnancy, or marked weight loss.
Fat tissue, most of the time seen in the lower abdomen.
Muscle separation, which can occur by itself, or as a result of pregnancy. Sit-ups or crunches don’t help in this situation as once the muscles relax, they separate and the tummy bulges out.
Liposuction alone can take care of excess fat tissue, but loose skin and stretch marks must be addressed by one of three techniques: dermatolipectomy, mini-tummy tuck, or full tummy tuck.
Q-15 What does it means dermatolipectomy?
A- A dermatolipectomy is a procedure that takes out skin and fat but does not tighten the abdominal muscles. It benefits most slender women who have wrinkly or excess skin but good muscle tone. It has the same scar as a tummy tuck.
Q-16 Should I get a mini tummy tuck? Whom is it best suited for?
A- Well a mini tummy tuck is best suited for women who don’t have stretch marks or saggy skin but have a pouch below the belly button. It can be done through an incision in the belly button, or through a C section scar if the patient wants a little excess skin taken off.
Men, on the other hand seem to have their pouch above the belly button. A doctor performs the mini tummy tuck in the same fashion by going thru a small incision in the belly button. Consult with a doctor at CosmeticHarmony.com
Q-17 In What condition a mini tummy tuck is really needed?
A- Mini tummy tuck is done when there is a very localized fullness in the lower abdomen, so that less muscle repair and skin removal is needed. The partial abdominoplasty (mini tummy tuck) requires one to two hours in surgery.
Q-18 When should I consider a full tummy tuck?
A- The full tummy tuck or abdominoplasty addresses the three components of abdominal deformity (skin, fat, muscle) so it benefits most women who want as flat a stomach as possible and skin as tight as possible. Results, especially when combined with liposuction of the flanks, are dramatic. Consult with a doctor at www.cosmeticharmony.com to find out which procedure will fit your needs.
Q-19 Would I have a flat abdomen after a tummy tuck?
A- The abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery is combined with an abdominal panel binder (APB). This procedure assures that after all the inflammation is gone (3 to 6 months) your abdomen wall is 80% to 100% flat and in 80% of the cases free of stretch marks as well. This procedure also helps the patient to continue loosing weight even months after surgery. (Also read below concerning Abdominal etching).
Q-20 What is an Abdominal Panel Binder or APB?
A- It is a procedure done during the Tummy Tuck operation that helps to tighten the abdominal muscles. The combination of APB and a dermalipectomy offer the best and most dramatic improvements in abdominal contour. A Tummy Tuck without an Abdominal Panel Binder will not reduce the waist line.
Q-21 Is it possible to combine an Abdominoplasty with a Liposuction?
A- Yes. For a better final result Abdominoplasty is often combined with fat removal of adjacent areas like the hips or the upper abdominal area. Discuss the possibility of additional liposuction of separate adjacent areas with your surgeon during the consultation.
Q-23 I would like to have a tummy tuck or liposuction. How can I determine one or the other?
A- The factors which enter into that decision are the amount of fat present, the condition of your skin and the condition of the muscle supporting the abdomen. You should visit with a plastic surgeon in order to determine if liposuction is a good procedure for you or if you need the more extensive surgery like a tummy tuck.
Q-24 How safe is a tummy tuck?
A As with any operation, there are some risks, but they are rare. Now a day this type of procedure is very safe.
Q-25 Tummy tuck is the best way to perfect my body shape?
A- Tummy tuck surgery, like other cosmetic plastic surgery, is a means to enhance body shape, but it cannot create a perfect shape. You should have realistic expectations and understand that a tummy tuck is not a “quick fix” or a substitute for diet and exercise. Talk to a board-certified plastic surgeon to help you decide which surgical options are best for you.
Q-26 I am looking to get a full tummy tuck would it be wise to get liposuction at the same time?
A- We strongly recommend a liposuction at the same time as a tummy tuck, this combo can greatly enhance the final results.
Q-27 Where the mini tummy tuck incision is made?
A- During Mini-Abdominoplasty, the plastic surgeon makes an incision that generally spans only the width of the pubic area, and that is similar to a C-section incision. In both procedures, patients with excessive fat in the hips and flanks may have liposuction in these areas to contour them, but not in the areas of the abdomen that are being stretched because this could cause damage to the blood circulation in those areas, leading to scarring or even skin loss.
Q-29 Will the tummy tuck incision leave scars on my abdomen? Will I be able to use a two piece bathing suites without concerning about scars?
A- During Mini-Abdominoplasty (mini tummy tuck), the plastic surgeon makes an incision that generally spans only the width of the pubic area, and that is similar to a C-section incision. As with most surgical procedures, scars do result from tummy tucks. Typically, surgical scars appear to worsen during the first few months following a tummy tuck – this is normal. In some tummy tuck cases it may take up to a year before most scars flatten out and lighten in color. While scars never disappear completely, tummy tuck scars are placed in areas that will subsequently be covered by clothes, two piece bathing suits, etc. A skilled plastic surgeon makes this incision so that the resulting scar is hidden under a bikini or by undergarments.
Q-30 Is there anything I can do to reduce scarring or bruising?
A- For the first or two days after surgery most doctors recommend that you have as much rest as possible. Some patients feel that applying vitamin E or aloe vera to the scar may help. If you apply these creams do not rub the scar for about six weeks because you can damage the fragile new tissue. If you have tapes or stitches in place, do not use any cream or lotion unless instructed.
Q-31 Is there a surgery that can completely remove severe stretch marks? If so, where can I get this done?
A- No. In my opinion, there is not yet a laser or any other procedure that allows for complete removal of stretch marks. If they are on the abdomen and a tummy tuck is otherwise needed, many can be removed in this manner.
Q-32 Can I have the scars removed by laser?
A- The scars fade with time but do not disappear. They can not be removed by laser.
Q-33 I had a tummy tuck in 2000 and then I had to have a hysterectomy. The cut made for the hysterectomy was on top of the previous scar from the tummy tuck. It left a terrible purple, wide scar. Would a scar revision fix this problem?
A- A scar revision is all that is needed. Both scars would be removed and a new scar made which would, likely, heal in an acceptable manner, much like after your first procedure.
Q-34 What about my stretch marks? Can a tummy tuck remove them?
A- In many cases, a tummy tuck does help rid of stretch marks because it removes most of the “stretched out” skin below the navel.
Q-35 What is the best non-surgical way to get rid of deep stretch marks caused by rapid weight gain during pregnancy?
A- If the stretch marks are red, they can be reduced with a laser. They tend to progress to white anyway and these are very poorly treated by laser, DermaPeel, dermabrasion, etc. If you have a lot of excess skin, a tummy tuck procedure can be performed to surgically remove the stretch marks. All other treatments, in my opinion, improve things, at best, 10% to 15%.
Q-36 I also have skin which hangs over the sides of my hips. Can a tummy tuck fix that too?
A- If you have excess skin and fat which hangs over your hips, you should consider the lower body lift procedure. The body lift includes an outer thigh lift and buttock lift, in addition to the tummy tuck. Please see those sections of our web site for photos and more information.
Q-37 Can sagging skin on upper thighs be corrected at same time as tummy tuck?
A- Absolutely, both the abdomen and the thighs can be addressed during the same operation. However, this is rather lengthy surgery and you as the patient must be in excellent health to withstand both operations at once.
Q-38 Will my waist line be affected by a tummy tuck procedure?
A- Yes. As an added benefit of the tummy tuck, not only will the abdominal region be firmer and flatter, but the waist will be smaller as well.
Q-40 Is Abdominoplasty a good way to lose weight?
A- No. Diet and exercise are the best means of removing unwanted fat, and a healthy lifestyle is an important factor, however, some people find that no matter how careful they are with food and however hard they exercise certain areas of fat will not budge.
Q-41 Is there anything to help me reduce my weight before I do a tummy tuck
A- Tummy tuck procedures, unlike liposuction, should be performed when you reach your ideal or desired weight. There are really only two healthy means of reducing weight. Diet and exercise. There are many diets available but many that will not help your general health. The Shintani diet as well as the McDougall diet are two which promote healthy eating habits for a lifetime. They should help.
TUMMY TUCK FOR MEN
Q-42 Can men benefit from abdominoplasty?
A- Yes, there are now many men that are also taking advantage of abdominoplasty for treating a large stomach.
A- Many men are concerned about having “love handles,” a “pot belly,” or a “spare tire.” Such concerns are not unfounded; right or wrong, our society places a high value on looking fit and young, for men as well as women. Male abdominoplasty, also called “male tummy tuck,” is a common procedure that can reduce the size of a protruding belly by removing excess skin and tightening the muscles in the midsection. Tummy tuck surgery, for many men, can deliver a flatter, tighter, more aesthetically appealing abdominal contour.
Tummy tuck is a very common procedure for men. Patients who have lost a significant amount of weight frequently have excess skin that may be excised with a tummy tuck. This skin usually would not tighten with exercise or dieting alone. Tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) can help patients achieve their ideal figure following a successful program of diet and exercise.
A- Yes. Because abdominoplasty is a form of body contouring, a male tummy tuck differs from a female tummy tuck in that the surgeon is trying to achieve a very different body aesthetic.
Q-45 How is the Male Tummy Tuck Procedure perform?
A- Abdominoplasty surgery for men is usually an outpatient procedure, performed under general or local anesthesia and sedation. In a traditional male tummy tuck procedure, an incision is made in the lower abdomen from hip to hip, and a second incision is made to reposition the navel. The abdominal muscles are tightened and excess skin is removed. The remaining skin is stretched to create a firmer, tighter abdomen.
In a partial, or “mini,” male tummy tuck, less skin is removed, and the navel is left intact. A smaller incisional scar is left behind, and the recovery time is shorter compared to the full male abdominoplasty. Liposuction can also be performed at the same time to remove any excess fat from the area. The full male tummy tuck procedure takes approximately two to five hours and the partial male abdominoplasty requires one or two hours to complete.
In an extended tummy tuck, the surgical incision extends around the patient’s flanks, and the treatment area is expanded to include the “love handles” and upper hips. To determine which type of tummy tuck might be most appropriate in your case, consult a surgeon in your area or send pictures to contact@cosmeticharmony.com for a FREE QUOTE.
During the endoscopic tummy tuck, small incisions are made and using a small camera device, the surgeon tightens the abdominal area. No skin is removed in this procedure and it is less invasive than other tummy tuck procedures.
A- Frequent or dramatic changes in weight can cause the abdominal muscles to weaken, the skin to sag, and stretch marks to appear. In many cases, however, simple aging is the primary reason behind the flabby midsection that is the source of frustration and disappointment for many men. As we age, fat redistributes itself to the abdominal area. For many men, exercise alone cannot produce the slim, fit, and youthful looking result they desire. Male tummy tuck surgery (or male abdominoplasty) can improve the appearance of the abdominal region through the removal of excess skin and tightening of the abdominal muscles. For the best results, male abdominoplasty should be teamed with a balanced diet and regular exercise. A common and highly successful procedure, tummy tuck surgery can create a tighter, flatter abdominal area for men, as well as provide a boost in confidence and a new, more youthful contour.
TUMMY TUCK PROCEDURES
A- In an effort to achieve the best tummy tuck result, several different surgical techniques are available. The most appropriate technique will be selected based on the condition of the patient, the extent of the procedure as well as the patient/surgeon preference.
Most tummy tuck procedures are performed under general anesthesia. In what many surgeons refer to as a full tummy tuck procedure, a surgical incision is made across the lower abdomen right above the pubic area. Following the creation of this initial incision, a second incision is made around the patient’s belly button as a means of loosening the surrounding skin. Next, the patient’s skin is separated from the wall of abdomen. Following this surgical maneuver, the surgeon pulls the loose abdominal muscles from the left and right flanks and sutures them together. This action results in tighter abdominal muscles, creating a stronger, firmer abdominal wall as well as a smaller waist.
Directly after the tightening and suturing of the abdominal muscles, excess skin is removed and a new opening is made in the correct position for the belly button. To complete the abdominoplasty, any remaining incisions are closed with sutures (stitches) and/or staples. Lastly, surgical gauze is placed over the incision area in an effort to keep the abdominal region clean and free from infection.
A second option different from a full tummy tuck, and designed to treat problem areas existing below the belly button, is a partial tummy tuck. This less invasive form of abdominoplasty is frequently performed on an outpatient basis and typically requires a local form of anesthetic. Contingent on the patient’s desired outcome, as well as their pre-operative status, the surgeon may recommend that either a partial or full tummy tuck be done in conjunction with
Liposuction.
Q-48 Will I need to combine a liposuction with my tummy tuck?
A- Liposuction is frequently incorporated into those tummy tuck cases where additional fat deposits need to be removed from the hips, resulting in more rejuvenated, dramatic body contour. Occasionally, liposuction alone may offer the best results. The most appropriate treatment options will be discussed during the surgeon-patient consultation.
Q-49 Do I need a general anesthesia for a tummy tuck?
A- For tummy tuck procedures we use general anesthesia administered by an anesthesiologist certified by the Colombian Board of Anesthesiology with training and certification in advanced cardiac life support. We also use a long-acting local anesthesia solution at the end of the operation. This helps to minimize patient discomfort in the hours following the tummy tuck and leads to a smooth recovery.
Q-50 As far as location is concerned, where does tummy tuck procedure take place?
A- While many tummy tuck procedures are performed in a hospital setting, some are done in an office surgical suite. The location of where the tummy tuck procedure is to be performed will depend on the patient’s preferences as well as the surgeon’s.
Q-51 How long does the tummy tuck surgery take?
A- Tummy tuck surgery may take place in a time frame of two to five hours, depending on the extent of the repair. A partial abdominoplasty, or “mini tummy tuck,” should be shorter, generally taking one to two hours to complete.
Q-52 Do I need to stay in the hospital after a tummy tuck procedure is done?
A- Depending on the extent of the tummy tuck, an overnight stay in a hospital is not very common. In most cases, the patient may return home the same day. These issues are usually discussed and decided by the surgeon and patient during the initial consultation.
Q-54 What about the recovery process after a tummy tuck procedure?
A- The pain is generally slight and well controlled with the usual painkilling drugs available, both in hospital and at home. In the case of a mini-Tummy Tuck, there is also less medication: the stitches are only internal and the use of a compression bandage for 4 to 8 weeks is recommended. After surgery, clients have to rest for 24-48 hours and can then get up and walk around (small walks). For a little while, the sensation of tension in the abdomen will cause them to have a “bent forward” posture and coughing, sneezing and other activities which require tension on the abdominal muscles may provoke a sense of discomfort and a little pain.
A- On the first day after surgery, you will not feel too bad. You will be fairly groggy from the anesthetic, so your level of discomfort on the first day is less than day two and day three.
Q-56 What should I expect after surgery?
A- Bed rest for two to three days is recommended following tummy tuck surgery. While in bed, your legs should be bent up towards the hips in order to reduce the strain on the abdominal area. You will be provided with a firm abdominal binder to offer support to the tightened areas. Depending on the technique used, you may have to wear a support garment for several weeks. Generally stitches will be removed in stages over one to two weeks. Consult your doctor.
A- Be diligent about taking your pain medication around the clock. Do not wait to feel the pain in order to assess how much medication you will need. It is best to take the pain medication as directed by the doctor for the first three days and then think about tapering it off. If you wait to feel the pain, you will have to play catch up with the medications which can lead to high anxiety and the need for more pain medication.
A- Constipation is inevitable with surgery, anesthesia, pain medications, and decreased mobility. Helpful suggestions for dealing with constipation are over the counter medications such as: Colace, Dulcolax Suppositories, and Fleet enemas. Natural remedies like prune and apple juices work as well.
Q-59 How should I sleep after as abdominoplasty surgery?
A- Sleeping comfortably will be somewhat challenging for the first one to three weeks. A foam pillow wedge can help
You with sleeping by keeping you at a specific angle. It can also help in getting you get in and out of bed.
Q-60 Will I wear any special garments after the procedure is complete?
A- For a traditional Tummy Tuck, at the end of the surgery, a wide compression dressing is applied, which should not be touched by the client and will, generally speaking, be changed by the surgeon after 4-5 days. On this occasion, less medication will be applied but re-enforced, however, by a support bandage.
Q-61 How should I take proper care of cosmetic surgery incisions?
A- You will have steri strips over the incisions for the first four to six weeks after surgery. Once the steri strips come off, our team of doctors recommends Mepiform. It is a silicone sheeting that aids in the healing process of your scars. You will wear the Mepiform for approximately three months.
Q-62 Would I have drains after surgery?
A- Drains may be used to evacuate fluid that is produced under the skin; they are generally removed the week after your tummy tuck surgery. This allows the skin and superficial tissues to adhere faster to the underlying muscle and fibrous tissue. At Cosmetic Harmony the patients who minimize activity in the week following surgery are frequently able to remove their drains sooner.
Q-63 Would I have to remove sutures or staples?
A- Most of the sutures that are used to close the incisions are absorbable and do not require removal, but there is also one long suture that needs to be remove 20 days after surgery. If the patient is flying back home before this date, the doctor will instruct the patient on how to do it at home in one single step. Our physicians do not use staples, so there won’t be any hatch marks. It also may vary in some cases
Q-64 Can I take shower normally?
A- Showering after surgery can also be a little bit of a challenge. Showering during the first 3 or 4 days most be done with help of someone. If this is not possible, a sponge bath is recommended for the first three to four days. It is very important that you lay in bed while removing your girdle (compression garment) this will prevent you from passing out (fainting). Prepare to be absolutely exhausted after the first couple of showers.
Q-65 What can I do to expedite the healing process of my surgery?
A- Many surgeons recommend that tummy tuck patients begin a program of light exercise after the 5th day following surgery. The motion afforded by this activity will reduce swelling, decrease the possibility of developing blood clots and enhance skin tone. Vigorous exercise, such as lifting heavy objects, etc., should be put off until it may be done comfortably and the surgeon has provided their consent to do so.
Q-66 When can I resume my normal activities such as housework and work in general?
A- Mainly, patients should rest, doing only the light domestic chores which are permitted for the first week, then gradually increasing their usual activities and social engagements the next week and the one after that. Although it varies according to their pre-operation physical condition, they return to normal life and work after 2-4 weeks.
Q-67 When can I resume physical activities such as work out?
A- Sporting activities can be resumed after 3-4 weeks as far as swimming, yoga, and light sporting activities are concerned while, in regard to more energetic sporting activities (skiing, tennis, football, basketball, sailing, underwater fishing), it is better to wait for at least 6 weeks.
Q-68 When will I be able to resume my sexual activity (intercourses)?
A- Sexual intercourse can be resumed after 2 weeks. It will depend on the person’s comfort.
Q-69 What about driving? When can I resume it?
A- Driving can be resumed after 2 weeks.
A- There are potential complications that are associated with every type of surgery, including tummy tuck surgery. These complications include:
Many of the complications of tummy tuck procedures can be avoided or minimized if you closely follow all of your surgeon’s instructions.
For tummy tuck patients, one of the risks that should be considered as a remote possibility is blood clots. Any surgery that involves the use of general anesthesia for longer than 30 minutes carries a slightly elevated risk of causing internal blood clots. Although blood clotting is your body’s natural way of controlling the amount of blood loss that occurs after an injury, blood clots can become dangerous. When a blood clot forms inside a blood vessel, it can interfere with your circulation; in rare cases, it can break off and travel to other parts of your body, including the lungs, the brain, and the heart.
During your initial consultation, you will be asked to provide a medical history and other information that will help your surgeon determine whether you are at an increased risk of developing blood clots following surgery. If you are taking birth control pills, talk to your doctor about the possibility of discontinuing their use while you are preparing for and recovering from surgery. Studies have indicated that taking birth control pills while undergoing major surgery may increase the risk of complications resulting from blood clots. Your surgeon should also be made aware of all medications you are taking prior to performing the surgery. Hormone replacement therapy and some forms of cancer treatment can increase the likelihood of clotting. People over 40, people with heart problems, and women who have recently been pregnant also face higher levels of risk regarding the formation of blood clots.
The timeline for developing blood clots after tummy tuck surgery can vary, but the risk is usually greatest during the first few days following surgery. Surgeons sometimes employ compression stockings and pre or post-operative leg massages to decrease the risk of blood clots forming in the legs. Your surgeon may advise you to take short, gentle walks around the room within a day or two of your surgery to prevent blood from clotting in your thighs and calves. You should begin taking short walks outside your home a week after the surgery is performed. Although some movement is helpful and will actually speed your recovery, too much exertion, particularly before your stitches have been removed, can be hazardous to your health. Avoid all heavy lifting and vigorous activities such as jogging or rough-and-tumble sports for a minimum of four to six weeks after surgery.
Qualified surgeons will take every precaution to prevent infection during a surgical procedure. A careful surgeon keeps his or her operating room clean, sterile, and relatively warm. Contrary to popular opinion, a patient in a cold operating room is actually more likely to experience an infection than a patient in a room-temperature or slightly warm operating room.
Most infections following abdominoplasty result from the failure of patients to care properly for their wounds during the tummy tuck recovery process. It is important that you closely follow your doctor’s instructions on when to remove or change bandages, when it is safe to expose your wound to water, and how to keep your wound clean. Some bleeding and leakage are normal after major surgery, but if your wound is unclean, you risk infection.
The early signs of infection include fever, chills, and sweating. If the area around your incision begins to produce pus or if the liquid draining from the incision has a greenish tint or is draining too steadily, then you should contact your doctor immediately. Infections are treatable using increased drainage and antibiotics. The presence of an infection will prolong the time needed to recover from a tummy tuck operation. Delayed healing can sometimes cause more prominent scarring following an abdominoplasty. Because of the risks of infection, if you develop a cold or any other form of temporary illness, your surgery will most likely be postponed.
Any patient recovering from an abdominoplasty will heal at his or her own pace. There are, however, specific risks that are higher in tummy tuck patients whose incisions heal at a particularly slow rate. Young patients who are in good physical condition prior to undergoing surgery are expected to heal faster than older or less physically fit individuals. The tenderness, bruising, pain, and swelling that are experienced to some degree by most patients usually pass after about four to six weeks. Patients who continue to experience severe discomfort after six weeks have passed are considered to be healing slowly. In many patients, the healing of the abdomen does not proceed at a uniform rate. Often the operation site will heal a few weeks later than the outlining sections of the surgical wound. In rare cases, this irregular healing may lead to skin loss. Some areas of the skin may undergo a rapid and complete recovery, while the skin around the areas that are slow to heal may die and have to be surgically removed and replaced with a graft. In addition to the increased level of discomfort, patients who experience these complications after a tummy tuck procedure may suffer from more prominent scarring. Surgical revision is often an option for patients who are unhappy with their tummy tuck surgery results because of slow healing.
Many factors can slow the body’s natural healing process. Exposure to cigarette smoke decreases the size of the blood vessels in your skin. Larger blood vessels allow for better circulation of oxygen to your skin cells. The cells of a smoker’s skin are sluggish to heal because they are slightly more oxygen starved than the skin cells of a non-smoker. The presence of infection can also slow healing because it diverts the body’s immune resources away from closing your incisions. Carefully follow all pre- and post-operative instructions that you receive from your doctor and inform your doctor of your medical history, any medications you are taking, and the level of physical exertion that you are accustomed to. After the surgery has been performed, contact your doctor immediately if you suspect your site of incision may have become infected or may not be healing properly. Experiencing complications after a tummy tuck surgery really is rare, and with good patient-surgeon communication, most patients enjoy positive surgical results and a smooth recovery process.
-PREGNANCY AND TUMMY TUCK-
A- A tummy tuck is usually performed after childbearing has been completed. If a pregnancy is planned for the distant future; however, some women may be considered candidates for tummy tucks even before childbearing.
A patient who has lost large amounts of weight, for example, may have substantial overhanging skin of the lower abdomen. If she plans on pregnancy in only the distant future, the advantages of doing a tummy tuck now may outweigh the disadvantages.
This would also be the case for women with undesirable scarring on the lower abdomen from previous surgeries (such as a C-section). A mini tummy tuck may sometimes be advisable even if future pregnancies are planned.
A patient may still have children after a tummy tuck, but abdominal stretching during pregnancy may offset much of the benefit of the procedure. Further abdominal contouring procedures may be recommended after childbirth.
Q-72 What about pregnancy? Can I get pregnant after a mini tummy tuck procedure without affecting its result?
A- In most cases (not all cases), women considering abdominoplasty should not be considering additional pregnancies, or they may have the need for a second procedure to re-tighten the belly.
Q-73 I had a full tummy tuck operation 3- yrs ago, I did not want any more babies. I have just found out I am pregnant with twins. I am worried I may not be able to stretch enough for the babies? What will happen?
A- Congratulations on the pregnancy. Your muscles will stretch and no harm will come to the babies but a lot of what was done at the original surgery may be undone. You may require another procedure in the future.
Q-74 Can I have a baby even though my belly button was moved during a tummy tuck last year?
A- A tummy tuck will not interfere with having a baby; however, pregnancy may undo some of the benefit of the tummy tuck.
Q-75 Can I have a tummy tuck procedure during a C-Section or Natural Delivery?
A- It is not recommended. We strongly advise you not to. Elective tummy tuck surgery at time of birth is not a good idea. A woman’s hormones have changed tissues so the child can pass. There is much stress on the body during delivery. Distended tissues have not yet shown what laxity will remain. There is a new born child wanting care and attention.
Q-76 What Will I Look Like After my pregnancy? Do I need a tummy tuck to get my abs back?
A- Actually for most women, tissues recover nicely. Just how much depends on many factors. Multiple pregnancies stretching tissue, weight gain while pregnant, how you heal, can all factor into your final look. For those who remain with stretched tissues, tummy tuck abdominoplasty after pregnancy has much to offer.
Q-77 What is the cost of an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck procedure?
A- The physician’s surgical fee for the three types of tummy tucks (mini tummy tuck, complete tummy tuck, circumferential tummy tuck) range from $3500 to $7,500. Hospital charges, liposuction of the waist, flanks, abdomen and anesthesia are in addition to the physician’s fee.
All follow up office visits are usually included in the surgeon’s surgical fee. At Cosmetic Harmony the package includes all of the above in one simple and low fee. REQUEST YOUR FREE QUOTE NOW!
PERSONAL ISSUES CONCERNING TUMMY TUCK AND ABDOMINOPLASTY
Q-78 I am an attractive 30 yr. old woman but after 3 c-sections my lower abdomen is poochy and beginning to sag. Would liposuction work on this or would I need to get a tummy tuck?
A- It sounds as though there is excessive skin and muscle laxity which liposuction will not help. A full abdominoplasty would be the best procedure for you depending upon skin excess.
Q-79 I am thin but have a pouch from pregnancy. What would you suggest in my case?
A- Mini tummy tucks are indicated when there is not a lot of loose skin or stretch marks and only the part of the abdomen below the navel protrudes. It can be combined with mid-section liposuction for greater results.
Q-80 After loosing 125lb, I have now an excessive amount of loose skin that droops to my mid- thighs. What can be done for this hideous problem?
A- Excessive amounts of abdominal skin can be corrected by an extended tummy tuck or circumferential tummy tuck.
Q-81 Last year I had a mini tummy tuck and it’s fine but I do not like the lower relocation of my belly button. Can it be placed higher?
A- Probably not, but for a final diagnostic you must be examined in order to make a definite determination. You need to ask your plastic surgeon.
Q-82 I am scheduled to have a hysterectomy — is it possible to do an abdominoplasty at the same time? I had a C-Section delivery 16 years ago and my stomach never tightened back up no matter how much exercise I put into it.
A- Yes it is possible; however, the complication rate from both procedures does increase when they are done together. It is also a consideration whether a vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy is being performed. Your gynecologist may have a plastic surgeon that he/she works with often. I would suggest that you discuss this matter with them.
Q-83 I’m interested in abdominoplasty. If I have stretch marks all over my lower abdomen and above the navel area, would I still have stretch marks after the surgery?
A- After your Abdominoplasty, the stretch marks that are now above your navel will be repositioned well below it and therefore much less objectionable; however, not all will be gone.
Q-84 I have many large stretch marks on my abdomen and hip area. I would like to get a tummy tuck, but I am thin and I think there’s not allot of skin to pull what do you recommend, should I see a reconstructive surgeon?
A- If your goal is to remove the stretch marks this is difficult to achieve particular in the hip region. The abdominal marks may be removed by an excision of some of the affected skin as part of a “mini or full” tummy tuck or some variation of such. A consultation with a surgeon would be necessary to determine if anything would help. A much faster option is to send at least 3 pictures of the areas to REQUEST YOUR FREE QUOTE NOW!
OBESITY AND TUMMY TUCK
Q-85 If I am overweight (100 lb or more) can I still have a Tummy Tuck and/or Liposuction for a sagging abdomen?
A- The surgery – one of the specializations of Cosmeticharmony.com – is also carried out on obese, or ex-obese, clients. It is, however, necessary to evaluate whether it is worth operating or not in terms of the result that can be achieved. In fact, the risk of complications in overweight clients is also greater. In these cases, it is better initially to begin with a diet in order to loose weight.
Q-86 Is there any alternative for obese patients?
A- If diet and exercises has not given substantial results, we recommend you visit a gastric bypass specialist.
Q-87 What is a panniculectomy procedure?
A- A panniculectomy removes hanging fat and skin, typically after massive weight loss. It may be performed as a single procedure or combined with a tummy-tuck, depending on the patient’s condition.
Q-88 And what is the difference between a panniculectomy procedure and an abdominoplasty?
A- Panniculectomy is different from abdominoplasty, in that abdominoplasty tightens the muscle as well as removes excess skin and fat, but a panniculectomy only removes excess skin and fat. A panniculectomy may also be performed with another abdominal surgery, such as a hysterectomy, repair of the abdominal wall or hernia of the belly button.
Q-89 How do I know if panniculectomy is suitable for me?
A- Panniculectomy candidates typically suffer from obesity, or have recently experienced significant weight loss, or suffer post-pregnancy issues with inordinate fat localized below the belly button.
Candidates may have fat extending as low as the knees, over the hips, and around the back. These conditions cause panniculectomy candidates to experience a host of health issues, including back problems, the breakdown of skin, rashes, ulcers, or skin disorders. These conditions may interfere with everyday life — walking, standing, or sitting may become very difficult.
The best candidates have stabilized their weight for at least one year. The candidate must be participating in a proper dietary and exercise plan. Candidates who have had the gastric bypass procedure should wait until one year after gastric bypass surgery or Lap-Band surgery, after the health problems associated with obesity have subsided.
Q-90 I Just want my six-pack to be exposed? Do I need a tummy tuck?
A- No. If you already have good abs, but they are hiding behind persistent excess fat, then you don’t need a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) you may want to sculpt the area to bring out your hidden six-pack by doing an abdominal etching.
Q-91 What is an abdominal etching? Is it different from a tummy tuck?
A- Abdominal etching is a type of Liposuction that takes you a step beyond conventional liposuction fat removal. This procedure is intended to give you a flatter, tighter stomach area, with stronger muscle definition.
Abdominal etching also differs from abdominoplasty. In an abdominoplasty, the abdomen muscles can be tightened or removed, whereas abdominal etching only removes excess fat.
Q-92 Who is the appropriate candidate for abdominal etching?
A- The best candidate for abdominal etching surgery has naturally athletic-looking underlying muscles that can be accentuated with abdominal etching. People who are liposuction candidates, with very localized, exercise-resistant fat deposits, can obtain additional improvements through abdominal etching. The strength of the results depends on personal anatomy. The ideal candidate also follows a proper diet and exercise program, which are necessary to maintain the benefits.
The abdominal etching technique can be performed at the same time as liposuction. The procedure may be performed at the same time as other procedures as well, depending on the combination treatment plan you have developed in consultation with your surgeon.
Q-93 what is the Abdominal Etching Procedure?
A- Abdominal etching is performed in the doctor’s office or in an outpatient surgery center. Time in surgery is about one hour. The procedure is often performed under local “twilight” anesthesia, while you are sleepy, sedated, and awake; or general anesthesia, while you are asleep. You can discuss anesthesia options with your doctor and the anesthesia provider.
Several small incisions (1-2 millimeters in length) are made in the belly button or in natural creases of the abdomen so that the incisions are not highly visible. The surgeon uses a cannula (a hollow tube-like instrument) to remove excess fat and skin. It is a delicate procedure that includes sculpting grooves in the fat layers to emphasize a muscular appearance. A different cannula may be used to perform liposuction and to perform the muscle-definition sculpting.
Most patients return home within hours after surgery. Results can vary among patients due to personal anatomy factors such as the unchangeable appearance of the underlying muscles.
Q-94 What about the healing process for Abdominal Etching?
A- The doctor will supply a complete postoperative instruction list to reduce the risk of complications. The doctor will fit the patient with a medical compression garment to wear at all times other than bathing for three to six weeks, or as directed by the doctor. Patients often can shower within 48 hours after surgery. Pain, swelling, and bruising may occur, all of which can be managed with medications and proper care.
Restrictions include no exercise or lifting of ten pounds or more. There cannot be any pressure placed on the abdominal area.
Normal activities typically can be resumed in one to three weeks. The full results of abdominal etching appear within six months of the procedure. But patients often see results such as better-fitting clothes and a firmer abdominal appearance much sooner.
Q-95 Is there any complication I should be worried about with Abdominal Etching?
A- Complications are possible with any medical procedure. The most common but infrequent complications include infection, bleeding, and excessive scarring. The doctor can intervene in these situations; however, they can prolong the recovery period. Be sure to discuss the possible risks and treatments with your doctor.
Q-96 What is the cost for abdominal etching?
A- Abdominal etching includes three fees: local or general anesthesia fees, facility fees, and surgeon’s fees. Since the abdominal etching procedure is often performed during traditional liposuction, you pay only one anesthesia fee and facility fee. Since your treatment will be customized to fit your needs, only a range can be given. Average total fees range from $3,000 to $8,000. This estimate does include the cost of the liposuction. Q-97 What do I need to do to prepare for a tummy tuck?
Your participation in preparing for tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery will help to optimize your tummy tuck results and minimize your recovery time. There are several matters to consider:
Maintaining a well-balanced diet is central to preparing for any type of surgery. Providing your body with the proper nutrients helps to strengthen your immune system, which will result in a faster recovery. Taking a multivitamin may be helpful in some cases, but be sure to discuss this with your doctor first. Some vitamins that are normally good for the body may increase the likelihood of deep scarring or produce an otherwise inhibited healing process. It is important that you avoid vitamin E intake for about two weeks prior to undergoing surgery, as vitamin E can interfere with blood clotting. Under normal circumstances this helps decrease an individual’s likelihood of contracting heart disease, but in the context of surgery it can lead to hemorrhaging. Wheat germ, nuts, and some vegetable oils contain the largest amounts of vitamin E.
Candidates for abdominoplasty should be as close to their ideal weight as possible before the tummy tuck is performed. Obese patients are generally poor candidates for abdominoplasty as they are at higher risk for suffering complications during the post-surgical healing process. Eat a well-balanced diet and safeguard your health by losing the weight prior to getting a tummy tuck.
Smoking increases the risk of surgical complications, whatever the surgery. Smoking decreases the amount of oxygen that is circulated to your skin cells by constricting your skin’s blood vessels. Less oxygenated skin cells have a slower healing response. If you smoke, your surgeon will probably recommend that you stop smoking at least two weeks before your tummy tuck is scheduled. Even then, smokers are at increased risk compared to non-smokers. Nicotine patches or gum should not be used to take the place of cigarettes or cigars as they also are associated with increased complications.
Regular exercise is helpful in preparing for abdominoplasty surgery. By exercising, you increase your metabolic rate and build muscle mass, which helps you to avoid gaining weight during the sedentary tummy tuck recovery time. A strong heart promotes a faster immune response, thus speeding up your abdominoplasty recovery, so be sure to include plenty of aerobic exercise in your fitness regime.
One risk faced by tummy tuck patients is the formation of blood clots in the legs. Your doctor will usually recommend that you take gentle walks during your recovery process to decrease the likelihood of experiencing this complication. However, having strong, well-toned leg muscles prior to surgery will help your body combat the formation of blood clots during the initial day or two after surgery, when you are unable to move or will be moving with difficulty.
Another reason to exercise before undergoing tummy tuck surgery is that the best abdominoplasty candidates are within 15 percent of their ideal weight. Abdominoplasty can lead to dramatic improvements to the appearance of people with small, but stubborn, fat deposits and loose, sagging skin around the belly area. It is not, however, necessarily the best choice for seriously overweight patients. Patients who are obese are significantly more likely to suffer complications after tummy tuck surgery. Losing a lot of weight after an abdominoplasty can also undermine tummy tuck results, leading to the need for further surgery to reshape the abdominal skin. Those whose weight prevents them from being good candidates for abdominoplasty may wish to consider the possibility of liposuction instead.
It’s a good idea to discuss your plan to undergo tummy tuck surgery with your personal physician or family doctor if you haven’t already. Any medical problems that you have should be taken into careful account by your family physician and your cosmetic surgeon before abdominoplasty surgery. Your cosmetic surgeon will also take your complete medical history and conduct a thorough physical examination as a part of your pre-operative preparation. Because of the risk of infection, should you develop a cold, flu, or other temporary illness, your surgery will most likely be postponed.
Be sure to tell your surgeon about any and all medications or herbal supplements that you’re taking. Many medicines and even vitamins that are normally good for your body may be unhealthy for a person who is about to undergo surgery. Your doctor will tell you to discontinue the use of any substances that may decrease your body’s ability to recover from surgery two weeks before your tummy tuck. Vitamin E can interfere with the body’s blood clotting response, causing increased bleeding during surgery. The same is true of aspirin and some NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). The use of birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, and some forms of post-cancer treatment medication may also involve an increased risk of complications during or after surgery. Use of these types of medications may, by contrast, produce an increased risk of developing dangerous internal blood clots that can in rare cases lead to embolism. Many cosmetic surgeons recommend a daily vitamin C supplement in the weeks leading up to your surgery while some recommend the use of a multivitamin that does not contain vitamin E. Consult your surgeon about the use of nutrition supplements prior to surgery. Remember to fill any pain medication prescriptions and bring them with you on the day of your surgery to avoid any unnecessary post-operative discomfort.
